ST. GEORGE — A delegation consisting of runners, City of St. George and Washington County School District officials and 10 ninth-graders selected from an essay-writing competition will depart Tuesday, November 5, for a weeklong stay in the Far East, as part of the St. George Marathon’s exchange with its sister marathon city Ibigawa, Japan.
“The marathon exchange is a cherished tradition that we are thrilled to renew each year,” said Mayor Michele Randall. “This long-standing partnership provides opportunities to learn about a different culture and create unforgettable experiences that highlight our unique relationship.”
With the exception of a few years during the COVID-19 pandemic, the two marathons have exchanged delegations annually in an effort to enhance each marathon and to broaden the scope of understanding between countries and cultures. Both marathons have built reputations for their excellence. The exchange program has played a part in the success of both marathons and new ideas are fostered as these two marathons grow and mature.
Host families in Ibigawa will house the St. George delegation and take them throughout the area. The event culminates in the Ibigawa Half Marathon, with local elite runners Aaron Metler, a four-time winner of the St. George Marathon, and Kassi Harmon, the 2024 Female Master’s Champion, competing.
